چکیده

The development of persistent contrails was modeled to determine the sensitivity of their climaterelevant properties to various parameters. Optical depth and area coverage varied most strongly with vertical shear. For a 4-engine aircraft and 130% ambient relative humidity with respect to ice, a moderate shear of 0.005 s−1 reduced the peak depth by 79% and increased the coverage by 450% after twenty minutes compared to a zero shear case. Depth was also sensitive to aircraft type and humidity, but variations in coverage were small. In these cases, larger aircraft and higher humidity resulted in larger depths.

A simple framework for assessing the trade-off between the climate impact of aviation carbon dioxide emissions and contrails for a single flight

Persistent contrails are an important climate impact of aviation which could potentially be reduced by re-routing aircraft to avoid contrailing; however this generally increases both the flight length and its corresponding CO2 emissions. Here, we provide a simple framework to assess the trade-off between the climate impact of CO2 emissions and contrails for a single flight, in terms of the abso...

The dependence of contrail formation on the weather pattern and altitude in the North Atlantic

[1] Aircraft flying through cold ice-supersaturated air produce persistent contrails which contribute to the climate impact of aviation. Here, we demonstrate the importance of the weather situation, together with the route and altitude of the aircraft through this, on estimating contrail coverage. The results have implications for determining the climate impact of contrails as well as potential...

Aircraft Contrails Factsheet

1EPA 2Printed on paper that contains at least 30 percent postconsumer fiber. 1 This fact sheet focuses on contrails produced by aircraft engine exhaust. However, the term " contrail " is also used to refer to the short trails sometimes briefly appearing over aircraft wings or engine propellers, especially under mild, humid conditions. These contrails consist entirely of atmospheric water that c...

Reducing the climate change impacts of aviation by restricting cruise altitudes

Two of the ways in which air travel affects climate are the emission of carbon dioxide and the creation of high-altitude contrails. The latter have been found to potentially play a major role in climate change accounting for the largest impact from the aviation sector. One possible strategy for reducing the impact of air travel on climate change is to significantly reduce the formation of contr...

Aerodynamic contrails: Microphysics and optical properties

Aerodynamic contrails form when air flows across the wings of subsonic aircraft in cruise. During a short adiabatic expansion phase, high supersaturations trigger burst-like homogeneous ice formation on ambient liquid aerosol particles within a wing depth. Small particles freeze first, because they equilibrate most rapidly. Ambient temperature is the key determinant of nascent aerodynamic contr...
